Studying in Germany as a Refugee
It is very good news for you studying in Germany , in terms of higher education as a new refugee in Germany! Well, yes, you can study in Germany like other international students, especially if you have been granted asylum, if you are a granted or “tolerated” refugee – and the anvil procedure is still in progress.
With a refugee status, you can safely apply to a specific studying in Germany university and receive admission to study. Who are you looking for? You are looking for higher education at a German university.
German universities and degree courses
There are three types of higher education institutions in Germany for studying in Germany: universities, polytechnics, followed by colleges of art, film and music. Universities and colleges are mainly funded, offering free lessons, while private colleges are rather expensive.
There are four types of higher education study programs you can sign up for:
Basic study (Bachelor) – intended for students studying for the first time,
if you want to work in Germany as a doctor, lawyer, teacher or pharmacist, after you have completed your studies in your home country,
Master program – for Bachelor graduates,
Doctorate – for students who have a master’s degree.
In this context, you can obtain the following degrees:
Bachelor degree (BA, BSc, BSEng)
6-8 semester program, 3 to 4 years, 180 up to 240 ECTS credits
Master degree (MA, MSc, MEng) Studying in Germany
2-4 semester program, 1 to 2 years, 60 to 120 ECTS credits
Philosophy Doctor (Doctor of Philosophy) degree (Ph.D.)
4-10 semester program, including research thesis (dissertation) complete with a doctorate.

Admission Requirements for the University
The university admission requirements, as mentioned earlier, which apply to you as a refugee, are the same as for any other international student. More detailed information can be found on the following article.
Proof of language skills (German and / or English)
Most German universities offer their programs in German. But, there are so many international programs available in English or in combination with German or other languages. For more information on proof of language skills, read here.
Proof of health insurance
Like any other applicant, you too must have proper health insurance for the duration of your studying in Germany.
There are several health insurance companies in Germany, legally and privately. For the legal there are AOK Baden Wuerttemberg, Barmer GEK, DAK – health, KKH – commercial health insurance, TK – technician health insurance and additional information can be found here.
Proof GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) result
In some cases, the university can request proof of the GMAT test. This test is usually required for business programs, mostly when applying for a master’s program.
Proof GRE (Graduate Record Examination) result
This is one of the most required diploma and business schools anywhere in the world.
Proof of refugee status in Germany
You must prove that you enjoy refugee status in Germany. Learn more about asylum and refugees in Germany on the website of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.
The University wants to require you to submit a valid passport copy.
The university also wants to require the submission of passport photos necessary for your student ID card and identification.
Another necessary document is CV or CV, which is not always required. This is a document with at least two pages, on which you provide your personal information, about the previous formal and non-formal education and, if applicable, work experience. The information you provide should be in chronological order and in a typical European “EUROPASS” format.
